The Senior Software Engineering Manager accomplishes departmental and organizational objectives through building, mentoring and training multiple teams of engineers. This includes activities related to performance management and human resources. This position uses company core values to guide decisions and behaviors in order to elevate our culture within their team and across the organization. In addition, this position supports technology and product strategy within their teams and business through collaborative and educational efforts.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Coaches, motivates, and professionally develops direct reports and others.
2. Sets clear team objectives and measurements aligned with organizational goals.
3. Responsible for performance evaluations and recommending compensation changes.
4. Builds and strengthens teamwork and cooperation within and across teams.
5. Implements lean solutions to improve team efficiency while maintaining effectiveness.
6. Removes organizational impediments including hidden challenges.
7. Assesses and improves team health.
8. Creates a culture that makes room for failure and learning.
9. Leads the hiring process for team members.
10. Contributes to department staffing plans and budget processes.
11. Coordinate with Nelnet Cyber Security Group (CSG) to ensure that NBS is compliant with all Nelnet security policies.
12. Creates engineering standards in coding practices across teams.
13. Mentors Software Engineers in best practices.
14. Creates an environment of best practices in engineering through personal example, developing and engineering products, creating deployments, and leading system architecture design concepts across teams.
EDUCATION:
1. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
EXPERIENCE:
1. 5+ years of experience in IT Team area with a demonstrated ability of successfull team leadership.
2. 2+ years of experience in management role.
3. Proficiency in Python & Java required.
4. Experience with AWS deployments required.
5. Experience with auto scaling design.
6. Experience deploying AI models in Bedrock framework.
7. Experience using AI coding assistants (Claude, Cursor, ect...).
8. Experience in developing MCP and API custom connectors.

Salary range for this role is: $63,000-$127,000
