The Impact of a Lead Database Reliability Engineer at Coupa:
As a Lead Database Reliability Engineer, you will be the architectural anchor for our Microsoft SQL Server infrastructure. This isn't a traditional DBA role; you will be responsible for building the automation frameworks that make manual intervention obsolete. You will design, scale, and secure our database infrastructure across multi-cloud environments (AWS/GCP/Azure), ensuring that "Reliability" is part of the code from day one.
What You'll Do:
Architectural Leadership: Design high-availability (AlwaysOn), data replication, schema migration (for VM/containerized workloads), disaster recovery, and scalable data architectures that support global, high-traffic applications.
Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Use Terraform to provision cloud resources and Chef for configuration management to ensure a consistent, repeatable SQL Server environment.
Advanced Automation: Develop sophisticated PowerShell modules to automate complex database lifecycle tasks, from automated patching and backups to performance drift detection.
Performance Engineering: Act as the final point of escalation for deep-level SQL Server performance tuning, including query optimization, indexing strategies, and hardware/storage throughput analysis.
Cloud Evolution: Design and implement modernization plan to migrate SQL Server workloads from IaaS (VM instances) to PaaS (GCP CloudSQL / AWS RDS for SQL Server)
Reliability & Stability: Implement SLIs/SLOs for database health and build automated self-healing mechanisms to minimize downtime.
What You Will Bring to Coupa:
10+ Years of SQL Server Expertise: Extensive mastery of SQL Server (2016-2022), including internals, memory management, and high-availability patterns.
The Automation Trio: Advanced proficiency in PowerShell, Chef (or similar CM tools), and Terraform. You believe if you have to do it twice, it should be a script.
Windows Ecosystem: Expert-level knowledge of Windows Server administration, especially as it relates to SQL Server performance and security.
Cloud Native Mindset: Proven experience managing database workloads in a major cloud provider, preferably AWS or GCP.
Architectural Vision: Ability to design complex systems that balance performance, cost-efficiency, and 99.99% availability.
