Role Overview
We are seeking a Senior Field Service Engineer – Life Sciences to support a large and well-established installed base of laboratory instrumentation across Gauteng, with additional regional customer support across Southern and Sub-Saharan Africa.
The role is focused approximately 60% on Flow Cytometry analysers and 40% on Centrifugation systems, supporting both clinical IVD laboratories and research environments.
Given the size, density, and technical complexity of the Gauteng installed base, the successful candidate must be technically strong, highly organised, customer-focused, and comfortable working independently in a high-demand service environment.
Installed Base – Gauteng
Gauteng represents one of the most significant Beckman Coulter Life Sciences instrument footprints in South Africa, with 300+ Life Sciences instruments currently installed.
The installed base includes a substantial Flow Cytometry portfolio and a high-volume centrifugation environment supporting critical diagnostic, clinical, research, and laboratory workflows.
Flow Cytometry Installed Base — Approx. 60% Role Focus
The successful candidate will support 70+ Flow Cytometry analysers across Gauteng, including:
- Aquios CL – 48 systems
- DxFLEX – 7 systems
- CytoFLEX family – 11 systems
- CytoFLEX
- CytoFLEX S
- CytoFLEX LX
- CytoFLEX SRT
- Navios EX – 5 systems
These platforms support high-throughput clinical diagnostics, hematology, immunology, cell analysis, and research laboratory workflows.
The Senior Field Service Engineer will play a key role in ensuring instrument uptime, system reliability, customer confidence, and continuity of laboratory operations.
Centrifugation Installed Base — Approx. 40% Role Focus
The role will also support an extensive centrifugation footprint of 200+ centrifuges, including:
- Allegra series
- X-Series
- V-Series
- Allegra 6 / 21 / 25 / 64
- Avanti platforms
- Avanti J-Series
- Avanti JXN platforms
- Optima ultracentrifuges
- Optima XPN
- Optima XE
- Optima Max-XP
- Microfuge laboratory centrifuges
- Additional specialty systems, including Airfuge and preparative centrifuges
This represents a high-volume, safety-critical service environment requiring consistent preventative maintenance, strong technical discipline, accurate diagnosis, and rapid customer response.
Key Responsibilities
Flow Cytometry Service Support
- Install, service, maintain, and troubleshoot Flow Cytometry analysers, including Aquios CL, DxFLEX, CytoFLEX platforms, and Navios systems.
- Perform preventative maintenance, calibrations, software and hardware upgrades, system validations, and technical checks.
- Diagnose and resolve complex optical, fluidic, electronic, mechanical, and software-related issues.
- Support both clinical IVD and research laboratory environments.
- Ensure all service activities are completed in line with quality, regulatory, safety, and documentation standards.
- Provide technical guidance, customer support, and user training when required.
- Partner with internal commercial, applications, service, and regional support teams to deliver a strong customer experience.
Centrifugation Service Support
- Service, maintain, and repair Allegra, Avanti, Optima, Microfuge, and other centrifugation platforms.
- Perform rotor inspections, speed verification, temperature verification, vacuum troubleshooting, and safety checks.
- Execute preventative maintenance and corrective repairs to support maximum instrument uptime.
- Identify potential safety risks and ensure compliance with centrifuge service and operational standards.
- Support high-throughput laboratory operations where equipment reliability is critical to customer workflows.
Territory & Customer Support
- Manage primary field service responsibility across Gauteng, supporting a large and dense installed base.
- Provide additional regional support across Southern and Sub-Saharan Africa when required.
- Plan and prioritise service activities effectively across a geographically broad territory.
- Maintain accurate service documentation, reporting, and follow-up actions.
- Build strong customer relationships through professional communication, technical credibility, and reliable execution.
- Act as a trusted technical partner to customers and internal stakeholders.
Qualifications & Experience
- Diploma or Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Biotechnology, Life Sciences, or a related technical discipline.
- Minimum 3–5+ years of experience servicing laboratory, diagnostic, biomedical, or medical instrumentation.
- Strong hands-on experience with Flow Cytometry analysers is essential.
- Experience with centrifugation systems is highly advantageous.
- Experience working in regulated IVD, clinical laboratory, hospital, research, or life sciences environments is preferred.
- Strong understanding of preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration, validation, and customer-facing technical service.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Willingness to travel across Gauteng and regionally across Southern and Sub-Saharan Africa.
