Strategic Influence on the Product: Your root cause findings and evidence-based
insights will directly shape our product roadmap and system stability through a close working relationship with Product Engineering.
Advanced Systems & Environment Experience: Gain hands-on expertise executing complex production integrations, platform upgrades, and zero-downtime feature rollouts in secure, high-availability environments.
Leadership & Professional Growth: Opportunities to mentor junior engineers, lead major incident responses, and establish best practices across the engineering organisation.
Role Overview
As an Application Systems Engineer, you will serve as the technical authority for your assigned application, responsible for its stability, performance, and advanced troubleshooting. This role focuses on deep dive diagnostics, complex technical escalations, and Root Cause Analysis (RCA). You will build genuine product expertise within your area, reducing reliance on Product Engineering and enabling the wider support organisation to resolve more independently over time.
Responsibilities:
Complex Technical Escalations: Take ownership of high-priority technical escalations within your assigned product area, acting as the definitive point of expertise for your application.
Deep Dive Root Cause Analysis (RCA): Identify underlying software or configuration issues, formulate effective workarounds, and drive the necessary long-term fixes with Product Engineering.
Product Engineering Bridge: Act as the primary liaison between front-line teams, QA and Product Engineering, influencing, tracking, and validating system fixes, resolving independently where possible to minimise development overhead.
Major Incident Response: Coordinate and drive the response during major incidents, ensuring rapid service restoration within agreed SLAs.
Production Integrations & Upgrades: Execute feature rollouts, application upgrades, platform maintenance, and system integrations directly within customer environments under strict change control.
Risk Mitigation & Product Feedback: Identify operational and technical risks early, providing evidence-based recommendations to Product Engineering teams to improve product quality and long-term stability.
Technical Documentation & Coaching: Capture and publish diagnostic findings, workarounds, and resolution paths to improve front-line issue resolution, while providing hands-on mentorship to elevate the technical capabilities of junior team members.
Product Specialisation & Continuous Learning: Stay current with product updates, releases, and changes to maintain deep expertise in your assigned product area and remain the team's go-to authority on emerging issues.
Technical On-Call: Participate in a technical on-call rota to provide after-hours emergency support for critical production issues. (typically 1 week in 6, subject to team structure).
Person Specification & Requirements
Technical Experience: Proven track record resolving complex enterprise software escalations independently. Experience with in-house developed software is strongly preferred, requiring first-principles troubleshooting without reliance on vendor support.
Advanced Diagnostics: Strong troubleshooting skills with a focus on Root Cause Analysis and preventing issue recurrence.
Frameworks & Methodologies: Working knowledge of ITIL methodologies, specifically Incident, Problem, and Change Management.
Technical Communication: Able to translate complex technical findings and root causes clearly for both technical and non-technical internal stakeholders.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Effective at partnering with Product Engineering, QA and operational teams to drive long-term solutions.
Crisis Management: Composed and decisive during high-stakes after-hours emergencies or critical system outages.
Security Clearance: Must be able to attain NPPV3 and SC clearance (requires a minimum of 3 years UK residency).
