About the Role
As the Director Software Engineering you will lead and inspire engineering organizations shaping technical strategy and driving innovation at scale. Your role is crucial in defining and executing technical vision while fostering a culture of engineering excellence. You will establish and scale engineering practices that enable sustainable growth while ensuring alignment between technical initiatives and business objectives.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- This position has direct supervisory responsibilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Define and execute technical strategies aligned with organizational objectives
- Lead and mentor engineering leaders fostering their growth and effectiveness
- Drive organizational design and scaling strategies
- Establish engineering excellence programs and centers of innovation
- Partner with cross-functional leadership to shape product strategy
- Guide tool and technology selection across the organization
- Drive innovation and modernization initiatives
- Oversee architecture and design of large-scale software systems
- Establish and scale engineering best practices
- Drive adoption of emerging technologies and methodologies
- Lead technical evaluations and strategic decisions
- Guide system scalability and performance initiatives
- Ensure security and compliance across technical solutions
- Manage technical debt at organizational scale
- Drive resource planning and allocation strategies
- Establish quality standards and metrics across organizations
- Guide disaster recovery and business continuity planning
- Oversee major incident management processes
- Define and track organizational health metrics
- Advocate for and contribute to deployment process improvements
- Drive technology innovation and thought leadership
- Build strategic partnerships and industry relationships
- Guide organizational learning and knowledge sharing
- Research and evaluate industry trends and disruptions
- Influence technical direction through industry engagement
Skills/Abilities:
- Proven ability to lead and grow engineering organizations delivering large-scale software products
- Extensive knowledge of software development principles architectures and best practices across the entire technology stack
- Strong leadership mentorship and team-building skills to inspire and motivate large groups of engineers
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills to influence stakeholders at all levels of the organization
- Strategic thinking and ability to translate business requirements into technical strategies
- Track record of successfully navigating complex technical landscapes and driving innovation
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related field
- 10+ years of software engineering experience
- 8+ years of engineering leadership experience
- Comprehensive understanding of front-end and back-end technologies cloud platforms and DevOps practices
- Experience in overseeing development across multiple technology stacks and frameworks
- Proven track record in developing technical roadmaps including work estimation and large-scale system modernization
- Deep understanding of agile methodologies and their application in large engineering organizations
Physical Requirements:
- Work is performed indoors with potential for exposure to safety and health hazards related to office work. Could periodically travel to other office and operational sites. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
