Remote Healthcare Jobs by Role and Experience
Remote healthcare work includes patient support, medical coding, nursing, and therapy. Start with the qualifications and experience you already hold, then check the location and schedule requirements for each opening.
Start with your background
| Your background | Path to explore |
|---|---|
| Customer service, sales, or patient support experience | Patient support and enrollment |
| Coding training plus relevant billing experience | Medical coding and billing |
| RN qualification and relevant clinical experience | Registered nursing |
| Graduate clinical training and NP credentials | Nurse practitioner care |
| Relevant clinical education and independent licensure | Mental health therapy |
Patient support and enrollment
Help patients understand a program, complete enrollment, and arrange follow-up. Expect phone conversations, record updates, and activity targets.
- Education and credentials
- Requirements depend on the position. Cadence's enrollment example lists customer service and sales qualifications without specifying a clinical license.
- Employer example from September 2026
- Cadence asked for two or more years in sales or customer service, high-volume calling experience, and familiarity with CRM tools. This provides a possible route for applicants bringing experience from another industry. Cadence enrollment posting.
- Before you apply
- Check call-volume targets, shift times, permitted home states, and whether compensation includes incentives. Cadence lists US remote work and asks separately about California or Montana residence; confirm eligibility if either applies.
Medical coding and billing
Translate documentation into medical codes and help resolve claims or billing issues. Some jobs combine coding with accounts receivable and denial follow-up.
- Education and credentials
- BLS describes medical records work as organizing and processing health information, including assigning codes. Education and certification expectations vary by employer; review the exact credential requested.
- Employer example from September 2026
- Oasis required CPC certification, two years of recent accounts receivable and denial-management experience, and one year using eClinicalWorks. A newly earned coding certificate alone would leave several requirements unmet. Oasis coding posting.
- Before you apply
- Identify the coding specialty, required software, and recent-experience requirements. Oasis specifies US residence and work authorization without sponsorship; shift hours are unspecified.
Registered nursing
Remote nursing can involve patient education, message triage, and coordination with other clinicians. Read the duties carefully to establish the patient population and clinical responsibilities.
- Education and credentials
- Registered nurses complete an approved nursing education pathway and must be licensed. Employers may require a particular degree, specialty background, and additional state licenses.
- Employer example from September 2026
- Ro's seasonal virtual RN example required a BSN, an active unencumbered compact nursing license, and four years of RN experience. It was a six-month contract with an affiliated medical practice. Ro virtual RN posting.
- Before you apply
- Confirm home-state eligibility, licensing coverage, holiday work, and contract duration. A remote label does not specify every state where an applicant may live.
Nurse practitioner care
Provide primary or specialty care through the employer's virtual service. The patient population and scope of the position determine which specialty experience is relevant.
- Education and credentials
- BLS describes nurse practitioners as advanced practice nurses who need graduate education, state licensure, and national certification. Match the posting's specialty and authorization requirements to your credentials.
- Employer example from September 2026
- Included Health's urgent-care example asked for a family nurse practitioner graduate degree, national certification, an RN compact license, and at least three years of relevant post-training experience. Included Health NP posting.
- Before you apply
- Read license and residence rules separately. This example requires a Kansas license alongside separate residence restrictions, and includes evening, weekend, and holiday work. Review the full posting before applying.
Mental health therapy
Deliver therapy sessions, document care, and coordinate follow-up. Match your training to the population and treatment approaches named in the posting.
- Education and credentials
- Mental health counselors typically need graduate education and supervised clinical training; licensure requirements vary. The reviewed remote therapy example specifically requires an independent license.
- Employer example from September 2026
- Spring Health's therapist example required an unrestricted independent license. Three years of post-license experience was preferred. That distinction matters when deciding whether to apply. Spring Health therapist posting.
- Before you apply
- Confirm the permitted residence states, license type, client-session targets, and time allowed for documentation. This example lists 40 weekly hours and an average of 30 sessions.
Questions to resolve before choosing a path
Can I get a remote healthcare job without a clinical license?
Some support roles use customer service or administrative skills. The Cadence example above asked for prior sales or service experience. Read each requirement carefully: an employer may still require healthcare experience, certification, or specific software knowledge.
Does entry-level mean no experience?
Use the qualifications in the posting to judge fit. Separate required experience from preferred experience and mandatory credentials. All five examples here requested relevant experience; this selection does not establish availability for applicants with no work history.
Can I provide telehealth from any state?
Cross-state practice depends on state rules and the applicable authorization pathway. Employer residence rules are an additional check. Confirm your situation with the relevant licensing board and employer. HHS explains the cross-state licensing pathways.
What should I put on my application?
Make relevant credentials, licensed states, patient populations, software, and recent experience easy to find. For support work, include accurate examples of call handling, service quality, and follow-through. Check that the advertised schedule fits your availability before applying.
Sources and selection
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) supplies occupational background. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) supplies general cross-state licensing guidance. Employer examples come from postings we captured in September 2026 and illustrate the qualifications employers have requested. They do not indicate that those positions are still open.
